Frequently Asked Questions

.

Do you accept insurance?

I am not paneled with any insurance company. Thus, I do not accept any insurance. I will collect payment in full from you at the time of service. If you have a PPO type plan and want to submit a claim for out-of-network reimbursement, I can give you a superbill to facilitate any reimbursement you may be entitled to. Please note that submitting an insurance claim means I will need to give you a mental health diagnosis.

How long do appointments last?

Appointments are typically 50-55 minutes. With prior scheduling we can go longer or shorter as indicated.

How often do we meet?

For most services we meet once per week or once every two weeks in the beginning. After being established we tailor to your needs. Some services, like Neurofeedback, I recommend meeting twice per week for ideal outcomes.

What happens in the first session?

The initial session is the time for you to start to share your story, talk about your goals and what you would like to change. Another important aspect of the first session is deciding if we are a good fit. Do I seem like someone you can trust? We are establishing a relationship that will become the foundation for working together. You will begin to figure out some goals; I will begin to figure out how to help you get there.

Do you provide phone or video sessions?

Absolutely! I’ve been working with clients all over the world for decades so video and phone are very comfortable. If you are not local, or due to COVID-19, or just prefer to not meet in person that is completely possible. There may be some restrictions due to licensing for some services.  Any person in Arizona is permitted or if you are only seeking sport psychology consulting you can be located anywhere in the world.

What is the cancellation policy?

I require 24 hours notice of cancellation or you will need to pay for the appointment. An occasional an exception may be made in the case of an emergency. It’s important that we meet consistently in order to make progress.

Do you prescribe medication?

No, I am not a medical doctor. Many of my clients find medication is helpful, but many of them also progress well in therapy without medication. If you want to be evaluated for medication, either contact your primary care physician or I can make a referal. If you are already taking medication, I can coordinate care with your provider.

What kind of approach or therapy do you use?

I implement a number of theoretical orientations because I don’t think a single approach fits everyone. I most heavily utilize the models of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Positive Psychology, Animal Assisted Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Psychophysiology (bio/neurofeedback), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Play Therapy and Strength-Based Therapy.
